Robert Beck III, of Conewago Township, wrangles a deer that ran into the Giant just outside of Manchester on Monday night. Beck is an avid hunter and raises 16 deer of his own.

Unfortunately for police, a mischievous deer that got inside a Manchester grocery store was long gone before police could ask questions.

The deer busted through a glass entrance door of Giant on Monday night, and ran around inside before getting back out. There were two other deer spotted in the nearby parking lot, too.

The trio thought best and decided to skip town before police got there.

"They didn't hang around to be questioned," Northeastern Regional Police Chief Bryan Rizzo lamented.

The deer were seen running through the parking lot off of George Street, where they had their pick of nearby stores: a donut shop, a liquor store and a grocery store.

One deer slammed into a window of Smoker's Outlet, but didn't cause any damage, Rizzo said.

Another deer was seen running off through a nearby field.

But the third ended up slamming into a glass door at Giant Food Stores and briefly wreaked havoc inside, where some customers were shopping.

According to Giant, this all happened around 9:10 p.m. when the doe ran into the entrance door.

"It appeared dazed," said spokeswoman Samantha Krepps, "but continued through the store."

Three customers helped calm the deer and took it outside near a field next to the store where it ran off. No one was hurt. There was only minor damage to the store, according to Krepps.

"We were told a customer threw a sheet over it," Rizzo said.

Rizzo said his department was trying to view surveillance video of the four-footed break-in.

The store was working to fix the damage.
